Zoo

I've pretty much been editing for one year straight now with no lapse in weddings to edit. So, it was really nice to get out with my wife and two boys. We visited the Minnesota Zoo earlier this week and I took the time to capture it. I make it a point not to be heavy on the equipment(not even a tripod) for family functions. For a couple reasons. My wife thinks it's nerdy and most of all I don't want it to interfere with enjoying this time with my family. So I just packed the Canon 60D and a Canon EF 24-70 F/2.8L USM and filmed everything very quickly. And well, here are the results.

John and Jessica, 10.2.10

John and Jessica picked a perfect day for their wedding. I love October weddings. When you're filming outside, the temps are perfect. You're likely not to see streams of sweat falling from my brow. Great for everybody. Just ask Ted and Lica from July 3rd. The colors were peaking too. Which made for a perfect ending to their highlight as you'll see. Their ceremony was held in Delano and the reception at the DoubleTree in Minneapolis. I want to thank John for letting us mic him up early to capture the moment at the beginning of the film. One of my favorite intimate moments we've caught over the years. Since he was mic'd up I was able to hear just how in love these two are while I was editing it. Talk about "giddy" as Jessica says. I think I could've made a John giggle audio track that could be at least 10 minutes in length. Finally, of course the ever so popular jumping shot. Why photographers love taking this shot is beyond me, but it fit nicely into the film as you'll see (without being cheesy). Do you know anyone who has sprained their ankle attempting the jump shot in high heals? Pics beforehand were on the church grounds and in the sanctuary. Post ceremony pics were taken at the beautiful Lake Rebecca Park Reserve in Delano. Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Dan

Why is it taking so long for you to edit my video?

I get asked this question a lot.

When I first started eMotion Media Wedding Films, I had no clue how long it would take to edit one single wedding dvd until I actually completed it. I believe my first one took somewhere in the four week range once I started on it. Now does that mean I worked on it eight hours a day, 40 hours a week? No. I probably averaged a good 10-15 hours per week at the time. I don't think my next wedding happened for another month and a half so I also had no other weddings to film or to plan for in that four weeks. I probably put a total of 40 hours into the whole editing process in that time. I felt really good about how long it took. I think my contract at the time said completion time was an average of 4-6 weeks. My how times change.

Later, that same wedding season, September came along. Always the busiest month for filming weddings. I had four that month. It was then when I realized a 4-6 week timeline (no, not a deadline) was no longer feasible. I think I upped it to 6-10 weeks for the 2010 wedding season because of this. Now it stands at 2-6 months.

Why?

We film your wedding with three HD cameras. Each camera has an internal flash drive that holds 32 GBs of footage. 2 1/2 to 3 hours of footage per camera. Right there that's almost nine hours of footage for me to view, organize, and edit. On top of that, for weddings packages that have coverage of eight hours or more, every time we have filled up 16 GB SD cards besides the internal flash drive. So tack on another 2-4 hours of footage. Why so much footage? I take the importance of high quality footage very seriously. But right behind that is content. We don't want to miss a thing, and if I have three cameras rolling on the best man speech, I am happy because that gives me three cameras to choose from to put the best possible footage onto your wedding dvd.

So reason number one. I have nine to twelve hours of footage to view and organize and oh yea, import and log it too. It can take a whole day to import all of your video then log it. All of this before I even start to edit. I kid you not, I had a bride ask for her video three days after her wedding date. Sweet gal, understood everything after I explained the process.

Reason two. It is highly likely that your wedding is not the only wedding I film this year. Call me kooky, but I'm shooting for 20-25 weddings this year. It is quite possible that I still have 6, 7, 8 or even 10 weddings to edit before I even start on yours. It's all about the patience. No budding in line aloud. Not even if you slip me a twenty.

Reason three. Every wedding dvd I edit is treated with the same respect and carefulness as the next. I will not rush to finish someone's dvd just to get started on yours. I take my job seriously and I will take my time in order to give you the best possible product.

What can you tell me once you start editing my dvd? I can tell you progress on your dvd has started and expect to be viewing it on your 52 inch very soon. I can also tell you, friend me on facebook to get updates on the progress of your dvd. But, continue to be patient. You will get your dvd and it will be friggin awesome.

Finally, I want to give a shout out to all of my clients whose patience, understanding and kindness have clearly shown me that I am in the right business. The business of making people happy.

Jarad and Joanna, The Woods, Profile Event Center

You couldn't ask for a more tranquil setting than The Woods in Orono, MN. A wonderful backdrop for this wonderful couple. The rain held off, temps in the high 50s. Perfect really. Joanna, in her gorgeous dress and red shoes kept photographer George Day of MetroStyle Studios busy turning a wedding shoot into an all out fashion shoot. Jarad seemed to show interest in my GlideCam for a good part of the day, so I surprised him and let him film a portion of the Father Daughter Dance. Really a great job Jarad! The look on Joanna and Joanna's Dad's face were priceless. Maybe I'll post that dance at a later time. Pics and video at the St. Anthony bridge and The Ruins turned out great as the sun made an appearance. Our first time in The Profile Event Center's Casablanca Room was a welcome relief after filming in the Diamond Room next door earlier that month. The Casablanca Room was much roomier and brighter, which made filming and setup less of a challenge. And only one level! Not three! Either way, the first two minutes of the highlight features a cinematic look at The Woods via GlideCam. Enjoy!!!

The Blog

I've decided to dedicate a lot more time to the blog. Now you will be able to see your highlight video here as well. Plus, you'll read a little bit about my experience filming each wedding. You'll also get to learn a little bit more about the bride and the groom featured in the video.

I may post some older weddings first. We'll see.

In the meantime, enjoy our promotional video from last year. The 2011 promo will be available soon!
